Sunset House
We carefully crafted the Sunset House renovations to make the most of good attributes in the existing building whist developing a responsive architecture for the west-facing rear garden. A suite of regenerative features sustain our client’s occupation of the home in well-principled comfort.
Regenerative systems
Our clients tell us that the house is energy positive. That is that in combination, the solar array and battery storage provide electricity surplus to household demands across the year. High efficiency hot water and occasional heat-pump air conditioning are accounted for in this quota.
Our design also incorporates double-glazing, passive shading and high-level insulation to minimise demands on heating and cooling. The exposed concrete slab and ample opportunity for natural ventilation assist in mediating daily temperature fluctuations.
Layered screening to the west
The western facade employs a combination of deep reveals and permanent and operable screening to provide a facade of visual interest and high-level passive performance.
Integrated joinery
Cleverly crafted joinery makes the most of a smaller home. At Sunset House we developed a range of multi-functional interior solutions to maximise the functionality of each space.
Multi-purpose solutions include elements such as the kitchen bench that becomes an entertainment unit and seat then continues outside as a built-in storage bench. The island bench in the kitchen doubles as a bench seat with backrest for the dining table. Our client’s kids love standing on this bench and helping dad cook.
Upstairs a wider than usual hallway incorporates a a two-seat study with flanking screen walls and daylight from above. The hallway feels more generous that usual and doubles as movement space for the work chairs.
