Our Purpose

At Saltbush Projects we operate with the purpose of delivering meaningful public benefit through social, cultural and environmental impact.

Our Mission is to create sustainable and regenerative transformation in society through the home, communities and interpersonal networks. We do this by making, designing and teaching, primarily in the areas of art, design, architecture, built and natural environments, and food. We locate people, place and the ecologies that support them as central concerns to our activities.

To fulfil our mission we trade in a for-profit, social enterprise structure. Consistent with our mission, any profits or surpluses generated by our activities are either reinvested in the enterprise itself or directed to other community or purpose-driven activities that align closely with our own purpose.

Saltbush Projects derives a substantial portion of its income from trade. This income will be supplemented by grant funding, generally of a project or outcome-specific nature. We conduct our operations with transparency and engage with internal stakeholders in the governance and decision-making processes we carry out.

Guiding principles that we cultivate in our people and practices include:

  • Accept differences and respect autonomy

  • Acknowledge the traditional owners of country, recognising their wisdom and continuing connection to land, waters and culture

  • Embrace and engage with local communities, places and practices

  • Act with clarity and generosity whilst protecting the vulnerable

  • Communicate honestly and openly

  • Interact face-to-face and build community

  • Observe, listen, research and debate before acting

  • Act with humility and purpose when we do

  • Engage feedback loops and constantly refine our ways

  • Leave more than we take

  • Lend, borrow and share, trading things and skills

  • Reuse, repair or repurpose before replacing

  • Seek out and retain quality and expect chain of custody

  • Value beauty, sensitivity and compassion

  • Nurture growth that is qualitative over quantitative

  • Recognise that culture and nature are intertwined and there are no externalities
